Now you are getting into something I am really interested in talking about. My associate bought the previous 18-200mm and he is very satisfied, and according to the reviews this newer 18-250mm by Tamron has approved quite a bit, especially with the almost 14 times optical zoom speed. The beauty of this lens is the length. A very handy walk around lens with a long focal length, and it is very light. I tried out my associate's 18-200mm on his Canon XTi(400D) with battery grip on and I liked it. I dislike switching lenses outdoor when it is windy, dusty or sandy, not to mention when it is raining or snowing. With this lens you can prety much cover all your needs without having to change lenses. The price is right too, and I just checked this one you bought is actually cheaper than the previous 18-200mm model, what a steal.
lasallejai: any other lens recommendation? i have a 17-55mm f/2.8 and a 85mm f/1.8 both from canon. didn't make up my mind to get L lens though... a bit too heavy for me.
Your EFS 17-55mm is a very nice lens with images produced close to L Lens quality when done properly. I think you have got the close range covered, but some day if you do decide to upgrade your camera to a full size sensor one like the 5D or the 1Ds models this lens will not fit. for now I think you can stick to it for landscape and portriat with this lens. The beauty of this lens is its weight and picture quality. Your EF 85mm is a very nice lens for portriature, but try not to shoot it wide open for crispier pictures--like F2.8 or smaller. However F1.8 is excellent for indoor low light conditions and superb for creating background blur. With your most recent 18-250mm addition to your collection I think you have the most needed range covered. You are right about the weight of the L lenses, because I have a couple myself, but in term of picture quality they are almost a guarantee if you know how to utilize them. If I had to choose and save for a fourth lens, putting myself in your shoes, I would go for the EF 17-40mm F4.0 L USM. There are 3 reasons for this choice: (1) It is only 475g, (2)Ultra wide angle for landscape, (3) Price. Nevertheless, I have to warn you---once you have gone L it is very hard to go back! : )
thanks for the detailed recommendation. i will keep an eye on that lens. well... once you go L, never go back? i heard of this before too. well.. then i will have to work harder for this hobby!
By the way, you can find the approximate street prices for most of the cameras and accessories in Hong Kong here:

Comparing to what we have to pay here they are really dirt cheap in Hong Kong probably due to much lower import tax, not to mention no sales tax yet. For example, I was looking at the Canon 1D Mark III and I know for sure it is being sold at around $32,000 in Hong Kong, but here in Toronto the cheapest I can find is about $6,400CAD(with taxes all in), which translates to about $47,500 HK. I envy you guys, a lot!

Welcome to my world. I am "developing a protege" now. hoho

Love to see this new toy of yours in action. Are you a member of any of the photo sharing sites, such as flickr.com?
