Salivating eh?? The 40D is indeed another leap for Canon's technological improvements. I was thinking about it too after reading the reviews on the internet. For the price you cannot go wrong(more expansive here at around $12,000HK though), because the 1D Mark III is more than 3 times the price, but of course the 1D is extremely nice(with battery grip built in) with a tad more advance in features and effective mega pixels. Many people get mixed up with between the 1D and the 1Ds, by the way. My only debate is whether to go full frame than staying with a 1.6X crop factor sensor camera body. I am using the 30D right now so upgrading to a 40D may not be a wise move for me since I am considering the 5D for the full frame switch. Erica lass, you have to clean your sensor once in a while if you see spots on your exposures. Nevertheless, I guess with the new lens you have bought it is unlikely you need to swtich lense all the time, right?! The vibrating self-cleaning sensor is indeed a nice feature though. My associate has the 400D as a spare body he carries with him all the time for insurance, and he told me that he has not cleaned the sensor even once since he bought it last summer. He has to clean his 5D's all the time for that matter though. Any way, let us know how it goes and we will envy you from the bottom of our hearts! : )
Second thought: I would like to pursuade you not to upgrade to the 40D from your current 20D, because you should spend the money on glass! Forget all the specs of these bodies and tech talk about sensors MP, LCD, blah blah...the real value of the systems lie in the glass....the bodies will come and go, but the glass is a long term investment. If you're not sure what to do with your $$, buy a cheaper used body and splurge on the glass first...all bodies will come down in price eventually...some lenses are even going up in price now. For leaping from 8.2MP to 10.1MP with a little bigger LCD and self cleaning sensor I would rather spend that $9,000 on a new lens. I know the sensor of the 40D has been upgraded too, but I am sure it will be outdated in another year or two any way, so why bother. You have a very sharp walk around lens already and an okay travel lens with wide focal range so I think you should spend your money now investing in a wide angle lens--precisely the cost effective EF 17-40mm f4 USM I recommended earlier would be a very wise choice! Then you will have to practice shooting without IS with your steady hands! Just my 2 cents of the day for you! : )
Are you going to adopt a Speedlite flash, or one from another brand? External flash is extremely useful when doing close up, because my body built in one always casts a shadow at the bottom of my subject due to the camera body obstruction(the only way I can get away from that is by increasing the focal length so that I can keep a distance from my subject to avoid the shadow from my camera body), and I cannot bounce it against the walls or the ceiling. Moreover, the built in flash is only good for filling in any way and not really powerful enough in long distances. Nontheless, with your f2.8 super sharp lens(some reviews say it is as sharp as an L lens, and that is why it costs so much) I do not think you need to use flash much even with indoor situations unless you want to stop actions. Usually anything faster than 1/25 second shutter speed should be able to make time stop.

Yes, Aug 28th. I can't wait for food. Also need to fix a dust spot on my beloved D80. Sigh.
